Authoring Guardrails¶
The game can carry strong meaning without becoming an essay if the meaning stays embedded in play, place, and consequence.
Do¶
- Write from concrete situations.
- Let multiple characters interpret the same event differently.
- Make systems remember what the player changed.
- Use scarcity and uncertainty honestly.
- Give animals and places their own pressures.
- Let the player infer more than they are told.
- Keep philosophical ideas grounded in body, terrain, weather, tools, food, and social dependence.
Do Not¶
- Use NPCs as mouthpieces for the author's worldview.
- Reward agreement with a single correct ideology.
- Explain the metaphysics of the world too early or too completely.
- Make extraction harmless if the theme says dependence matters.
- Use spiritual language as decorative fantasy gloss.
- Turn scenarios into morality tests with obvious answers.
Test Question¶
After writing a scene, quest, scenario, or mechanic, ask:
Would the idea still come through if all explanatory dialog was removed?
If yes, the design is carrying the meaning. If no, the text is probably doing too much work.
