Ambiguous Spirituality

Possession, animal perception, ritual, and altered states should remain meaningfully ambiguous.

The game can support spiritual language without requiring the world to be supernatural. A ritual may be a cognitive tool, a social practice, inherited ecological knowledge, a material technique, a hallucination, or a real contact with another form of mind. Different characters can hold different interpretations.

The important point is not which explanation wins. The important point is that the experience changes what the player can notice, risk, and understand.

Design Use

  • Let rituals guide attention toward real signs in the terrain.
  • Let possession show animal limits as well as expanded range.
  • Let some characters speak spiritually and others materially without making either a fool.
  • Let the player benefit from practices before fully understanding them.

Guardrail

Do not turn ambiguity into vagueness. The event can be strange, but its gameplay consequence should be concrete.
